From Off-season to Peak Season: Behind the Annual Growth of Auckland Port's Exports
The Port of Auckland reported that its cargo volume in August 2025 remained stable, handling 192,313 TEUs, almost on par with the volume in August 2024 (-0.3%).
Compared with the same period last year, imports slightly declined to a total of 82,245 TEUs (-1.2%), while exports rose to 62,477 TEUs (+5.2%), indicating the sustained demand from overseas markets.
After a strong growth in July, the results in August reflected shippers' ongoing adjustments to changes in trade policies related to tariffs.
Importers moved their goods earlier in the quarter to avoid potential disruptions, while exporters benefited from the sustained overseas demand. The movement of empty containers is consistent with the seasonal pattern.
In August, the port of Auckland handled 90 vessel berths, an increase of 4.7% compared to last year, with an average of 2,137 TEUs per vessel, demonstrating effective berth utilization and Auckland's ability to manage large vessels.
Bryan Brandes, the maritime director of the Port of Auckland, said that they expect the freight volume in the fourth quarter to remain stable and Auckland will continue to be committed to ensuring reliable and efficient operations for all customers.
In the first eight months of 2025, the Port of Oakland handled 1.54 million TEUs, a 1.7% increase compared to the same period last year, making Oakland an important global trade gateway for the United States.
